The Bolívar Fuerte, “strong Bolivar”, was Venezuela’s currency from 2008 until hyperinflation rendered its largest denomination worth $0.023 on the black market. Rendered at two metres tall in acid yellow-green, the 100-bolívares note presents Bolívar’s portrait beaten and distorted. The question mark in the title is everything: Fuerte? The currency was named for its strength. The painting documents what that name became.
